Amazing Glaze™

Amazing Glaze canML Campbell’s Amazing Glaze™ is a fast drying solvent-based glaze that is used to create distressed, aged, highlighted and other similar effects over pigmented or clear base coats. Amazing Glaze™ comes in a neutral base that is then tinted using solvent-compatible colorants (Huls 844). ML Campbell provides a color chart that contains nine basic colors, covering the majority of situations where a glaze would typically be used. Beside these nine standard colors, Amazing Glaze™ can also be tinted to an unlimited number of custom colors.

Although Amazing Glaze™ can be applied by hand (e.g. by brush), it is designed specifically for spray application, and is particularly effective and efficient when sprayed with an airbrush-type spray gun, such as the SATA Dekor 2000. The glaze is typically applied on cabinetry or furniture where shaped or profiled detail work is found, such as at corners and in recesses and crevices of detailed moldings, brackets, fluted or beaded surfaces, etc. It can also be used very effectively as a shader in the major field areas of the work piece. For example, multiple layers of Amazing Glaze™ can be laid down on a surface, each layer being a different color and being separated by a clear-coat layer, in order to create a multi-layered distressed or variegated effect.

Amazing Glaze™ dries extremely fast, within 1 to 3 minutes. As it dries it forms a semi-powdery film that generates a weak bond to the substrate and can then be easily wiped or abraded away in order to produce the desired effect. A few of the materials that can be used to manipulate the glaze are: a non-scratching synthetic scuff or buffing pad, a soft cotton rag, masking paper, the back side of “A” weight sandpaper (especially if already well used), a finger, etc. After the desired effect has been created, a clear-coat is applied to provide final protection and finish. Amazing Glaze™ can be wiped any time after it is dry, but is best worked within 24 hours.

One of the main advantages of Amazing Glaze™ over a more traditional slow-drying oil-based glaze is that Amazing Glaze™ typically lends itself to faster production rates as well as easier reproduction of the desired effect when working on large projects. For example, when a slow-drying glaze is used to create a highlighted or distressed effect, the glaze is applied and then manipulated while it remains wet, until the desired effect is achieved. In other words, the application of the glaze and the development of the final effect must occur as a single continuous, uninterrupted process for each work piece in the entire job, and this work must progress expeditiously, or else the glaze may set up before the final effect is achieved. And if a portion of a work piece needs to be wiped off and reworked, adjacent areas that have already been perfected can often become damaged in the process, forcing the entire piece to be reworked from scratch. While this usually is not a problem for small individual projects (and may sometimes even be desirable), it tends to make the development of a uniform appearance on large projects more challenging, although by no means completely impossible.

The approach taken with Amazing Glaze™ however is quite different. Instead of applying and then immediately manipulating a wet medium all in a single continuous process, the Amazing Glaze™ is allowed to completely dry before it is worked. This means you can apply the glaze where needed over the entire project all at once (or in segments if you prefer), and then go back after it is dry and develop the final effect as a separate step. This allows manipulation of the glaze to be performed more uniformly over the entire project without having to constantly reapply glaze and without worrying about it drying too quickly during the manipulation (because it's already dry). This makes it a lot easier to achieve uniform results throughout the entire project.

Amazing Glaze™ is best used over ML Campbell’s Resistant™ pigmented conversion varnish or over Duravar Plus™ clear conversion varnish, although it may also be used over Magnamax™ pigmented or clear pre-catalyzed products. Either Krystal™ water-clear post-catalyzed or Magnamax™ clear pre-catalyzed finishes may be used over Amazing Glaze™ as a final finish. Duravar Plus™ may also be used as a final clear finish, but it will produce a noticeable amber cast. It is important to remember that excessive build-up of glaze can affect the performance and durability of the final finish.
